What is HackDelft?

HackDelft is the first hackathon organized by TU Delft’s W.I.S.V ‘Christiaan Huygens’. On May 13th and 14th, join 100 other students interested in math, computer science or design for 24 hours of learning, building, and having fun. This year’s theme is #trendhacking, and we’re excited to work with our four premium partners to provide HackDelft-exclusive tools and data for you to hack with this year!

Cases

Security and IOT

Do you want to decide which cyber security threats influence the decisions for big multinationals? Do you want to discover how the society keeps track of trends and threats within cyber security? Take part in the KPMG case and help organisations to decide critical cyber security decisions based on a large amount of data. Hack together new ways of processing cyber security intelligence and news and set the agenda yourself!

Finding Value In Trading Data

Optiver is an (algorithmic) trading company. We use huge amounts of market data to constantly improve our trading strategies. At Hackdelft we'll share a snapshot of the market data we use, and challenge you to create a way to analyze this to find trends and build a profitable trading algorithm capturing them.

Protecting your privacy

Aegon processes lots of personal data. From your address, income and credit score, to your passport, pension and family composition. All that data has to be stored in a secure manner, but also has to be accessible to our software. As a customer, you must of course have insight into who is using your personal data – and you must be able to block this access if you so desire. If you pick our case, we expect you and your team to use Amazon Web Services to create a secure upload portal that complies with the Dutch "Wet Bescherming Persoonsgegevens" or personal data laws.

It’s all in the balance

Many people check their bank balance every day: "Will I be able to pay for groceries, or am I going to come short?", "Did my paycheck come in, or do I need to save a bit more?" De Volksbank N.V. needs your creativity! Can you help us gain insight in bank balances, to help our customers gain better financial resilience? If you think you can – try our case! We’ve got anonymized bank balance data from 10,000 checking accounts, which you can use to build whatever you want. From an analysis to a visualization, to a predictive model, we’re excited to see what you come up with!

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend?

Any current university student ― undergraduate (BSc) or graduate (MSc) ― can apply to attend HackDelft.

How do applications work?

You can register by clicking the link at the top of this page; the deadline for applying is April 30th. Once all applications are in, we apply the following process to select candidates: the first 50 applicants who are members of the study association W.I.S.V. 'Christiaan Huygens' are accepted automatically; we'll select the other 50 hackers based on skills and experience. We’ll then get in touch to let you know whether you’ve been invited to attend.

What if I've never been to a hackathon before?

That’s fine! In the first few hours of HackDelft, we’ll explain exactly how everything works, and you’ll be hacking away with the rest of the participants in no time.

How much does it cost to attend HackDelft?

Nothing! HackDelft is completely free, thanks to our amazing partners.

What should I bring to HackDelft?

Bring your laptop, all the chargers you need (!), and some personal hygiene items to stay fresh for 24 hours (toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant). If you're planning to sleep, also bring your own mat and sleeping bag!

Are you going to feed me?

Yes. We’ll provide a dinner on Saturday (May 13), as well as breakfast and lunch on Sunday (May 14). There’ll also be plenty of snacks and drinks, of course!

Can I sleep?

Of course! Although many people will keep hacking through the night, we’re setting up a room to power nap in for a couple of hours. Please do remember to bring your own mat and sleeping bag.

Can I start working before the event?

No. You may not start work on any code or models you end up submitting to HackDelft before the official hacking kickoff.

How do teams work?

You'll be working in teams of up to four hackers. You can come with a team in mind, but if you don't have one, don't worry! There'll be a group formation workshop on Saturday.

How does judging work?

Once you’ve finished your project, there’ll be an expo. The judges will walk around, and you’ll have a short (think two-three minute) window to pitch to them. Based on these pitches, the judges will pick a few teams to pitch on the finalists stage. There, you’ll again give a short pitch and answer some questions. Finally the judges will retire and announce the case-specific winners and grand prize winner.

Where is HackDelft?

HackDelft will be held at TU Delft Sports and Culture, at Mekelweg 8, 2628 CD Delft. If you've been invited to attend, you'll get more details about the logistics as HackDelft approaches.

Do you have a code of conduct?

Just be nice to each other! If you want to read the boring stuff: MLH code of conduct
